Master's Degree

Applications 24-25:

Sound Design focuses on mastering the theoretical, technical and creative processes of sound production for various purposes, such as: Cinema (soundtrack development and surround mixing), Theater and Concerts (live sound recording and control), music production (microphonics, recording and mastering in studio), artistic installations (sound art), audio for computer games, among other projects.

The students' work is oriented towards project development, involving in all cases different artistic techniques and practices: the study of sound, microphonics, recording, synthesis, processing, mixing and reproduction of sound, using both analogue and digital.

Cláudio Tavares

Cláudio Tavares (more information)

Born in Porto. Graduated in Som e Imagem (specialization in Sound) at Universidade Católica do Porto. He is a recording/mixing engineer, has worked on dozens of albums by artists such as: Cícero, Meta, Conferência Inferno, Glockenwise, Sandy Kilpatrick, Samba Sem Fronteiras, The Weatherman, Souls of Fire, Bezegol, Beth Hirsch, April Ivy, Mundo Cão, Via, Throes + The Shine, Nuno Melo, among many others. As a musician (performer and/or author) he collaborates in several projects such as Glockenwise, S. Pedro, Throes + The Shine, Duquesa, For the Glory, The Last Internationale, Bié, among others, having participated in hundreds of concerts both in national and international territory.

In recent years he has also composed for theater, being responsible for musical direction and sound design.

Bernardo Bento

Bernardo Bento (more information)

With a degree in Theater - Sound from ESMAE and a Master's degree in Sound Design from UCP, Bernardo Bento has worked with sound for various artistic media, focusing mainly on theater and cinema. Since 2022, he has been teaching various courses at UCP.

Manuel Oliveira

Manuel Oliveira 

A sound designer and researcher with a Master's in Sound Design and a Bachelor's in Digital Game Design. He has experience in music composition, sound design, and sound direction. Currently pursuing a PhD at the Portuguese Catholic University, his research focuses on new media such as augmented and virtual reality and their application in cultural heritage, with recognized publications and awards.

Pedro Marques

Pedro Marques (more information)

Pedro Marques graduated in Sound and Image from the School of Arts and Film Scoring at the University of California. He is a composer of music for soundtracks, awarded by the Portuguese film academy for Best Soundtrack with the movie "Capitão Falcão". Currently, he is composing the soundtrack for the Netflix series "Rabo de Peixe”. Pedro is also the creator of the STAR Channel Logo audio.

Rui Lima

Rui Lima (more information)

Since 2003, Rui Lima has been participating as a composer, sound designer, and performer in cinema, theatre, contemporary dance, performing arts, video-dance, music and advertising shows, in productions by Cristina Carvalhal, Rui Horta, Joana Providência, Alfredo Martins, João Garcia Miguel, Rita Barbosa, Jorge Quintela, Ana Luena, Jorge Andrade , Victor Hugo Pontes, Nuno Cardoso, Marco da Silva Ferreira, among others, having presented shows in Portugal, Spain, Macedonia, Finland, China, France and Russia.

c. Professional Outlets

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to build a career:

  •      Artistic – development of own works as an author in the areas of Animation Film, Audio Production (Cinema, Radio, Concert, Installation), New Media (interactive installation, brand activation, Augmented and Virtual Reality content).
  •      Scientific – They can join CITAR or CCD research teams, develop R&D work that will define the future of the area. Progress to PhD.
  •      Professional - Create or intern and join companies in your area of expertise. In this sense, the aforementioned internship agreements are highlighted.

g. Internships

The internship is considered as part of the academic course, integrated in the training plan in the 2nd year of the study cycle (Training Curricular Unit - 60 ECTS). It is seen as structuring the professional attitude of a student of the Sound and Image course towards his future work activity. It must be structuring not only in view of the versatility of the basic and interdisciplinary subjects of the course, but also as a strong link between the University and the job market. The Curricular Internship is developed in the Hosting Entities according to each student's area of specialization, and lasts for a minimum of 24 weeks. An Internship Agreement is signed between the Hosting Entities and the Catholic University, which commits the two institutions involved in the duration of the internship, the student and the professor who accompanies him in this Curricular Unit.
