Master's Degree

Animation Cinema evolved and broke creative frontiers.
A new generation of animators who develop a hybrid animation cinema where traditional animation techniques intersect with emerging digital tools has emerged.
With the support of talented artists, the territorial dissemination of animation studios studios and platforms, animation has a unique imagetic potential, adding creativity and storytelling to capturing cinema audiences.

In this specialization of the Master in Sound and Image, the students' work is oriented towards the creation of animation cinema projects that involve different techniques and artistic practices such as: traditional animation techniques (sand, glass, drawing); 3D modeling, lighting and texturing; visual effects that integrate real image and 3D image; design, editing and graphics for video; the study of characters and narratives.

The Master in Animation confers skills to intervene in different graphic and cinematographic domains (Animated Cinema, Architectural Visualization, Visual Effects, Graphics in Cinema and Advertising,…). This specialization promotes teaching audiovisual artistic practices, sharing work and knowledge with the other areas of specialization offered by the School of Arts (Digital Arts, Sound Design, Cinema and Audiovisual Visual Effects).

Alexandra Ramires

Alexandra Ramires (more information)

Alexandra Ramires has been working in animation since 2009. In 2013 she arrived in Porto to work in the animation studios of the production company Bando Á Parte, which today has become a cooperative - BAP Animation Studio - of which she is a founding member.She is the director of the film ELO (2020) and co-director, together with Laura Gonçalves, of the films ÁGUA MOLE (2017) and PERCEBES (2024).

David Doutel

David Doutel (more information)

David Doutel was born in Porto, Portugal, in 1983. He graduated in Sound and Image at the UCP School of Arts, with extensive training in Animation. For the last 10 years he has developed his work in in the field of independent animation short films, both as director, animator and production director. Both in artistic and production departments he has contributed to the creation of several award-winning short-films that have been regularly selected to international film festivals. Has developed his career alongside with Vasco Sá with whom he shares the experience of direction on three short animated films, “The Shoemaker”, “Soot” and their most recent “Augur”, a Portuguese/French co-production. Has been working with Bando à Parte since 2011 and, together with Vasco Sá, has been responsible for the animation production direction and executive production

João Alves

João Alves (more information)

João Alves de Sousa is a professor in the areas of digital imaging, 2D and 3D animation and game design. Master in Sound and Image - Specialization in Computer Animation" and PhD in Interactive Art (Escola das Artes – Universidade Católica Portuguesa). He was recognized with the Young Portuguese Filmmaker award at Cinanima among several other prizes and distinctions.

João Apolinário

João Apolinário

João Apolinário Mendes is director of the "OLHO Animation Film Festival" and the "Fórum de Animação". He is Vice-President of "Casa da Animação". In his work he explores the transitions between animated cinema and puppets, having collaborated with the companies "Teatro de Marionetas do Porto" and "Redcloud Marionetas", with which he participated in six theater plays, in 2010 he founded the audiovisual production company " HUSMA", where he worked as a producer and director. He is currently pursuing his PhD in "Science and Technology of the Arts" at the "Universidade Católica Portuguesa", and has a master's degree in "Computer Animation" from the same institution.

Vasco Sá

Vasco Sá (more information)

Vasco Sá is one of the founders of BAP - Animation Studio, where he works as a director and producer. He has shared directing duties with David Doutel on the films: The Shoemaker, Soot, Agouro and Garrano, and is now co-directing their first feature, UNA. He has been working with the production company Bando à Parte since 2011, as part of the team on various film projects of different authors, both in the artistic and production departments.

Vitor Teixeira

Vitor Teixeira (more information)

Vitor Teixeira, a Espinho-based Senior 3D Designer at NotReal, work is focused on visual storytelling that blends his photography background with a passion for nature, design, and technology. Having transitioned from freelance work, Vitor is now working, full-time, with the amazing people of NotReal.

c. Professional Outlets

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to build a career:

  •      Artistic – development of own works as an author in the areas of Animation Film, Audio Production (Cinema, Radio, Concert, Installation), New Media (interactive installation, brand activation, Augmented and Virtual Reality content).
  •      Scientific – They can join CITAR or CCD research teams, develop R&D work that will define the future of the area. Progress to PhD.
  •      Professional - Create or intern and join companies in your area of expertise. In this sense, the aforementioned internship agreements are highlighted.

g. Internships

The internship is considered as part of the academic course, integrated in the training plan in the 2nd year of the study cycle (Training Curricular Unit - 60 ECTS). It is seen as structuring the professional attitude of a student of the Sound and Image course towards his future work activity. It must be structuring not only in view of the versatility of the basic and interdisciplinary subjects of the course, but also as a strong link between the University and the job market. The Curricular Internship is developed in the Hosting Entities according to each student's area of specialization, and lasts for a minimum of 24 weeks. An Internship Agreement is signed between the Hosting Entities and the Catholic University, which commits the two institutions involved in the duration of the internship, the student and the professor who accompanies him in this Curricular Unit.
