Curating films exhibitions: the case of Sarah Maldoror

Shortly after her passing in 2020, the idea of bringing Sarah Maldoror’s films into an exhibition started, whilst she had never enjoyed any film retrospective during her lifetime. The transition/translation from the movie theatre to the exhibition room triggered many curatorial questions and decisions, among them the issue of how the immateriality of the projection within the black box can become material in the “white cube”, and can start to dialogue with other elements, such as, in no particular order: paintings, sculptures and archival documents. To treat film as material in the physical exhibition space where the visitors’ bodies are in motion and they are allowed to speak is a challenge that modifies the relations of time and space, as well as individual and social captures of attention.

Curator at the Palais de Tokyo since 2020, François Piron is also an art critic, editor, and professor. He co-founded several cultural spaces: Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, which he co-directed between 2000 and 2006, and castillo/corrales in Paris between 2007 and 2015. He is also one of the founders of the publishing house Paraguay. Recently, he curated the exhibitions Toucher l’Insensé [Approaching Unreason] (2024), Sarah Maldoror: cinéma tricontinental (2021, co-curated with Cédric Fauq), which traveled from the Palais de Tokyo to Lisbon and Luanda, and is now on display at the Wexner Center for the Arts in the United States, as well as the exhibition Exposed (2023), in collaboration with Élisabeth Lebovici and Clément Raveu.
