The Master in Cinema at the School of Arts is an advanced course in contemporary cinema, allowing students to develop their creative and technical skills through individual projects. Over the course of two years, students can choose a specific focus for their work – fiction, documentary, experimental, or other artistic modalities – while being immersed in contemporary artistic thinking, challenged to understand the various mutations of moving images and how cinema is a place for reflection on the world.
In the first semester of the first year, the Master offers technical and creative development in contemporary artistic practices through a series of creative workshops on key skills in the film development process: screenwriting, production, cinematography, directing actors, montage, colour correction, sound design, soundtrack, and, of course, directing. Also offering experiences with analogue practices, the master's program includes a 16mm film workshop. In the second semester, students will be developing their final project – from the initial idea to the script and pre-production, ending the first year with a dossier on the film they will develop in the second year.
During this first year, the master's program will also welcome international guest lecturers, who will come to the university for a series of intensive classes on a specific topic in contemporary cinema. Erika Balsom and Mark Peranson are confirmed for the 2026/2027 academic year.
Between the first and second semesters, students will have an artistic residency experience outside Porto, allowing them to absorb knowledge in a real teamwork context.
The following workshops are confirmed for 2026/2027:
- Gabriel Abrantes (screenwriting and directing)
- Filipa Reis (production)
- Beatriz Batarda (directing actors)
- Leonor Teles (cinematography)
- Laetitia Morais (16mm filming)
- Mariana Gaivão and Claire Atherton (montage)
- Andreia Bertini (colour correction)
- José Vasco Carvalho (sound design for cinema)
- José Alberto Gomes (soundtrack)
The two first-year tutors are Diogo Costa Amarante and Margarida Cardoso.
In the second year, the tutor is Marco Martins.
