Filmmaker Matthew C. Wilson is the residence artist at the School of Arts in 2023, made in partnership with the InResidence programme of Porto City Hall. Wilson has sought to investigate, thematically, the processes of transformations proved by the climate crisis, playing with speculative futures.

Biographical note:
Matthew C. Wilson is an American artist, filmmaker and researcher. In his videos, sculptures and installations, viewers encounter a variety of agents - mercurial materials, sites, non-humans, characters and intersubjective entities - that are entangled in ever-changing natural processes and historical forces. Her projects use inquiry-based, site-specific, and methodologically eclectic approaches to trace the inertia of modernity through contemporary ecological crisis and into speculative futures.

Wilson holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University. He has participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program and numerous residencies including the Jan van Eyck Academie, Skowhegan, CSAV - Artists' Research Laboratory at Fondazione Antonio Ratti, Tabakalera Artistic Research Residency, Terra Foundation Summer Residency.

His film/video work has been exhibited at Vdrome.org, as well as at IFFR - Rotterdam International Film Festival, Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam, Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro, among others. Recent exhibitions includes: Het Nieuwe Instituut, Rotterdam; Marres, Maastricht; GMK/Galerija Miroslav Kraljević, Zagreb; Exhibition Research Lab, Liverpool; The Brooklyn Rail Curatorial Projects, Brooklyn, New York.
