Others, who?
New perspectives in Brazilian literature
Conferência

The Stranger
The 2025 annual program of concerts, conferences, exhibitions, and performances, organized by the Escola das Artes and CITAR, seeks to discuss the issue of the Stranger, curated by Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida, Daniel Ribas, José Alberto Gomes, and Nuno Crespo.
Geovani proposes with this conference a reflection on how, historically, Brazil produces foreigners born on its own soil. Black, Indigenous, favela-dwelling, or peripheral people continue to be treated by power structures as foreign or exotic bodies.
Drawing from the rise of these voices in contemporary literature, the conversation explores how these new perspectives challenge symbols, narratives, and the very notion of national identity.
Geovani Martins was born in 1991, in Bangu, Rio de Janeiro. In 2013 and 2015, he participated in the workshops of the Festa Literária das Periferias (Flup). His first book, the short story collection O sol na cabeça, won the Prêmio Rio de Literatura (2019) and has been published in ten territories around the world. Via Ápia is his debut novel, telling the story of five young people during the arrival of the UPP (Police Pacification Unit) in Rocinha. The book won the APCA (2023) award for best novel.
