The postgraduate study program in Curation and Art Markets aims to stimulate and deepen theoretical and professional knowledge in the areas of research and development of art curatorship projects, as well as to prepare future curators, critics and art researchers who wish to work in museums, galleries, centers and independent spaces, media and projects dedicated to contemporary art.

a. Characteristics

  • Framework and approach focused on the fundamental themes of curation, related to the worlds of production, circulation and reception of contemporary arts, and focus on the universes of creative values, cultural and market institutions, intermediary agents and also their audiences
  • Novelty of positioning in the national context and application of international artistic pedagogy models.
  • Theoretical-practical orientation and organization that reflect the centrality of curatorship studies in the context of art history and cultural studies, as well as the specificity of their fields of study and their professional practices
  • Project methodology based on a direct relationship with authors, benefiting from the project-based teaching model
  • Focus on research and implementation of a curatorial project. Use of the technical and artistic resources of the Escola das Artes (image and sound capture material; image and sound post-production laboratories; exhibition hall; library)
  • Unique facilities for the development of complex projects: Ilídio Pinho Auditorium, Exhibition Room and Pátio das Artes
  • Strong involvement of the community and cultural practices of the region
  • Different guests belonging to the national and international artistic milieu that will allow students to develop their projects in the broad and current context of curatorial practices and studies
  • Teaching with a strong presence and collaboration, through constant initiatives (Artistic Residencies, Seminars, Summer School, Exhibition Program) by international artists, directors and specialists in the fields of contemporary art and cinema
  • Own teaching staff with great organizational, research and creative capacity, including prestigious artists and researchers
  • Partnership with the Serralves Foundation.

b. Main Objectives

The Program aims to offer complete training in curatorial practices, combining a strong theoretical component and a historical perspective on curatorship to the development of a curatorial project, from its conception, production, and public presentation.

  •      Develop an artistic, conceptual and critical identity.
  •      Critically understand the history of art and curation as a way of sustaining a strong visual culture.
  •      Develop structured thinking about the great questions of history and human thought, which can be reflected in an artistic creation.
  •      Develop skills for the criticism and analysis of a cinematographic work.
  •      Acquire technical and curatorial knowledge of the design, reflection, production and communication process of an exhibition.

c. Competências

  • Formar especialistas nas diferentes áreas dos estudos de curadoria;
  • Desenvolver o ensino e investigação avançados da história da curadoria e das disciplinas com ela relacionadas como: antropologia, arquitetura, design expositivo, filosofia, história da arte, museologia, etc.;
  • Preparar especialistas que assumam a curadoria não só como campo de conhecimentos e investigação, mas igualmente como domínio prático profissional;
  • Desenvolver competências indispensáveis ao estudo da curadoria nomeadamente na organização de exposições;
  • Promover a capacidade de realizar exposições através do conhecimento dos diferentes elementos exigidos para a conceção, implementação, desenvolvimento, produção e receção de eventos expositivos;
  • Dotar especialistas das ferramentas necessárias à melhor compreensão da curadoria de arte, nomeadamente através do aprofundamento do conhecimento dos diferentes meios artísticos, das suas instituições, agentes e dinâmicas;
  • Proporcionar formação de base na área da gestão e produção de projetos de curadoria;
  • Capacitar os estudantes a operar em instituições públicas e privadas como autarquias, museus, fundações e outros espaços expositivos com vocação cultural;
  • Promover junto de profissionais a formação ao longo da vida.
