Taking place sideways with the CU Final Project I, this CU aims to provide a contextual awareness (cultural, social, political and historical) about the history of Portuguese Cinema. The critical acquisition of a knowledge of the tradition of modern cinema and of a “national cinema” will be based on the analysis of the New Portuguese Cinema in the 60s and its evolution in the following decades for different forms of expression and production.
After completing this unit, students should be able to:
a) Identify and contextualize the most important moments in the history of Portuguese cinema, since the 60s, as well as their authors.
b) Reflect on the positioning and particular features of Portuguese cinema when confronted with the cinema produced in the rest of the world.
c) Recognize the cultural, social and historical specificities of cinema produced in Portugal.
d) Elaborate independent and informed criticism and analysis on the recent paths taken by Portuguese cinema.
