On December 9, students from the School of the Arts had the opportunity to enjoy an out-of-doors lesson at the Serralves Museum. As part of the Editing and Portfolio curricular unit, the second-year students of the MA in Photography at the School of Arts visited the Dancing with my Camera exhibition, at the Serralves Museum.

Serralves visita

Accompanied by Professor Carlos Lobo, the students had the opportunity to get to know the work of Dayanita Singh (b. 1961, New Delhi) who, over the course of four decades, has developed a career distinguished by an approach to photography that challenges the various genres of the medium, constantly pushing its limits.

Dancing with my Camera, the most important exhibition dedicated to the artist to date, covers her entire oeuvre, from her first photographic project centered on the musical universe of percussionist Zakir Hussain (b. 1951, Bombay), to her most recent works, including Let's See (2021), inspired by the format of the contact sheet. The exhibition is a testament to the originality of form that defines Singh's work, also highlighting the artist's unique vision of themes such as the archive, disappearance, music, dance, architecture, gender and friendship.

Guided tours of the city's cultural venues play a significant role in complementing the learning process. These give students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the topics taught and to get a more practical grasp of the content conveyed in class.
