On January 16, the nominees for this year's Sophia Student Awards, an initiative organized by the Portuguese Film Academy (APC), were announced.
The 10th edition of the Sophia Student Awards will be held from February 22 to 25, 2024, in Albufeira, and features five films from the School of Arts, nominated in four of the six categories of the competition: Best Poster, Experimental, Fiction and Master's and Doctorate.
"Memories in Motion" by Gabriel Andrade, designed by Pedro Silva, was nominated for best poster. "Oxímora Vida..." by Fernando Sá Machado was selected in the Best Experimental Short Film competition. The films "Caixa Aberta", by Guilherme Afonso, and "Kintsugi", by Martim da Cunha, were nominated for Best Fiction Short Film. The film "Coast", by Francisco Dias, was nominated for Best Master's and Doctoral Short Film.

Synopsis: On April 1st, 2022, my grandfather passed away, and I got lost. I think my path changed when, a few days after his death, someone gave me a small VHS camera. "Memories in Motion" is a visual journey that leads the viewer to reflect on their momentary presence on earth and raises questions about the nature of a memory. On this journey, we discover that memories are more than static photographs in our minds. They are alive and constantly moving, transforming as we evolve as individuals. They influence us and move us forward.
“OXÍMORA VIDA…"

Synopsis: Rascal, a vagabond, embarks on a contradictory psychological journey to get out of the ego bubble in which his self-loathing and isolation have placed him. After his metamorphosis, his soul mate, Paloma, makes him realize that life is as complicated as it is simple - and that all he has to do is live.
“CAIXA ABERTA"
Guilherme Afonso
Synopsis: A director, an actress and a crew hitchhike through northern Portugal with friends and strangers in order to create a film. The itinerary is a series of locations as random as the movie they want to make. There is no movie yet. The idea develops as expectations change and the dialogues build naturally in each location.
“KINTSUGI"
Martim da Cunha
Synopsis: We follow two brothers (David and Henrique) on a road trip after their mother's funeral. During the trip, the two relive childhood moments, open up about their lives and discuss a defining moment.
“Coast”
Francisco Dias
Synopsis: One winter's night, the sea once again threatens the apartment tower where two neighbors live. The next day, their children come to pressure them to leave everything behind.
