Launch of the book “Mónica de Miranda · Depth of Field”

Wednesday, October 29, 2025 - 10:52

On October 29, the book “Mónica de Miranda · Profundidade de Campo” will be launched at the Batalha Cinema Center, at 7:15 p.m. in Room 2. The session will also include the screening of the films Beauty (2018), Caminho para as Estrelas (2022), and O Sol Não Nasce a Norte (2023), followed by a conversation with Cindy Sissokho, author of one of the essays in the book.

“Profundidade de Campo” is the result of the exhibition that was on display at the SoA Exhibition Hall and the Porto Municipal Gallery between March and June 2025, curated by Nuno Crespo and João Laia. Focused on resistance, memory, and ecologies of care, Mónica de Miranda's practice pays special attention to the dynamics of colonialism and personal geographies. The exhibition and the publication that will now be presented have no anthological ambition, but constitute an access to the works and creative process of the artist Mónica de Miranda:

"Depth of field, as a technical expression from photography and cinema, corresponds to the distance between objects in a visual frame. When manipulated through focusing or perspective processes, depth of field can make different temporalities visible in the same plane. It is from this image that the project manifests an encounter between utopian visions, ecology, and moments of care and listening, processes articulated in the actions, words, and images presented." João Laia and Nuno Crespo.

The book features essays by Cindy Sissokho and Igor Simões, and a conversation between the artist and João Laia and Nuno Crespo. The graphic design is by Atelier Pedro Falcão.

This edition is the latest issue of the Artistic Research Collection, published by CITAR, Sistema Solar/Documenta, and UCP Press.
