On January 17, School of Arts opened the exhibition All Them Swines, by artist João Maria Gusmão, curated by Nuno Crespo.
All Them Swines follows on from Animal Farm, an exhibition presented for the first time at 99 Canal in New York on February 2, followed by a second iteration at the end of May at ZDB, curated by Marco Bene.
Inspired by a cartoon version of George Orwell's novel about porcine authority within the human kingdom, the exhibition features loops of overlapping projections of animated films accompanied by the various sounds of the films and projections.
In the Exhibition Room of School of Arts, we find “Bitter Orange”, the only still image in this exhibition, accompanied by “Bedrooms”, a 16mm film.
The exhibition also includes vertical projections of 16mm film, “Rooster at dawn”, “Solar farm” and “Sunflower at dusk”, from 2023.
A exposição integra, também, as projeções verticais de filme de 16mm, “Rooster at dawn”, “Solar farm” e “Sunflower at dusk”, de 2023.
lso noteworthy is “All them Swines”, from 2024, a 16mm film remake of the 1954 animated film Animal Farm, directed by Joy Batchelor and John Halas, based on George Orwell's fiction.
Between metaphors from Orwell's writing and his own work, João Maria Gusmão raises some questions about politics and propaganda.
João Maria Gusmão was born in Lisbon in 1979.
Over the last twenty years he has developed an enigmatic and complex set of practices that range from experimental cinema to photography, encompassing other media such as sculpture and drawing, and extending to literature. His work tries to stimulate a remote consciousness in the viewer, both in terms of discourse and image.
All Them Swines will be on display until March 14 in SoA Exhibition Room, from Monday to Friday from 14:00-19:00.
