Brazil, 1969, 90’

Screening as part of the Beco das Garrafas Cycle, programmed by student Manuel Barbosa.

Beco das Garrafas centers on music as a form of gathering, language, unity, and ritual; all the films share this common element. In this case, I chose to approach this theme as a tribute both to my Brazilian heritage and to my paternal family, since at every family dinner we share musical moments — something that brings us together. Through this cycle, I also aim to convey that same feeling.

Synopsis:
In February 1969, French actor and composer Pierre Barouh arrived in Rio de Janeiro to explore the musical genre that increasingly fascinated him: samba. To document the music, Barouh sought out some of Brazil’s greatest musicians — Pixinguinha, João da Baiana, Maria Bethânia, Paulinho da Viola, and Baden Powell — attempting to capture the essence of samba, a Brazilian treasure.
