Workshop · The Use of Hydrogels and High-Viscosity Polymeric Dispersions in Conservation

24 April · 10:00-12:30 + 14:00-18:00

Hydrogels and high-viscosity polymeric dispersions (HVPDs) have emerged as innovative tools in the field of conservation and restoration, offering less invasive, more efficient and controllable solutions. They offer numerous advantages over traditional techniques for humidification, cleaning and the removal of unwanted residues. They allow for more precise control of humidity and solvent action, minimising excessive absorption by sensitive and porous materials.

The workshop, comprising both theoretical and practical components, will enable participants to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge regarding the properties, formulations and applications of different types of hydrogels and HVPDs. The programme covers cellulose-based thickeners and gelling agents, microbial sources (gellan and xanthan gums), seaweeds (agar, agarose), plant-based sources (KGM), as well as polymeric dispersions (PVA/B).
