Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage

Master's Degree

Applications 24-25:

  • 1st phase: 19 February to 18 April
  • 2nd stage: 13 May to 27 June*
  • 3rd phase: Vacancies remaining until 16th September*

*The call for applications for the 2nd and 3rd phases depends on the number of vacancies left over from the previous phase.

This Master's Degree provides advanced training that allows entry into the profession in an autonomous and individual way. Over two years, students will have the opportunity to combine tradition and innovation by applying scientific and technological methods to art and heritage.

It promotes concrete experiences in diverse environments, through internships and collaborations with national and international scientific, museological and academic institutions, as well as with several specialized companies in the sector.

The main objective is to value the service to the community, contributing to the knowledge, conservation, qualification and promotion of art and heritage.

a. Expected candidate profile

  • Interest in classical and contemporary artistic and cultural heritage
  • Interest in a diversified theoretical-practical training, based on a broad vision of Cultural Heritage
  • Willingness to work in a team with professionals from the same area and from other areas of knowledge
  • Taste for working in different contexts: workshops, on-site work, laboratories.
  • Manual dexterity, visual acuity and motor coordination.

b. Characteristics

  • Deepening of knowledge and experiences for the exercise of the profession, through the development of practices in the areas of interest
  • Development of research, through the elaboration of a dissertation and the stimulation of scientific publication
  • Projects and intervention activities in art and heritage in a real context
  • Specialized training that allows understanding the artistic techniques, composition and behavior of materials, knowing their degradation and carrying out the most appropriate treatments for their conservation
  • Possibility to develop skills in the areas of: Painting, Mural Painting, Sculpture, Carving, Contemporary Art, Integrated Heritage, Documentary Heritage, Archaeological Heritage, Scientific Collections, among others
  • Erasmus programs at European schools and universities
  • Participation in Technical Conferences and Advanced Training Workshops on cutting-edge technologies and methodologies with international experts
  • Contribution to research projects and collaboration with researchers from the Center for Research in Science and Technology of the Arts

c. Professional Outlets

In continuation of the Degree in Conservation and Restoration, the Master, with a duration of 2 years, confers a specialization that allows entry into the profession, independently and individually:

  • Integration in teams in public or private cultural institutions, such as museums, galleries, archives, libraries, foundations, monuments, etc., that have workshops, conservation and restoration laboratories or that develop preventive conservation programs.
  • Integration in teams of private conservation and restoration companies.
  • Coordination of conservation and restoration projects, prepares preventive conservation plans.
  • Carrying out diagnoses, defines intervention methodologies and carries out the most appropriate treatments for heritage conservation.
  • Developing applied research in the search for innovative solutions for heritage preservation.
  • Participation in multidisciplinary teams in the rehabilitation of built and integrated heritage and in interventions for the preservation of ancient and contemporary art and heritage.
