Techniques of Preservation and Conservation of Paintings I

10 ECTS / Semestral / English, Portuguese

Learning outcomes of the curricular unit: 

  • Recognize the materials and techniques used in the execution of painting on canvas, from the support to the surface layers. 
  • Develop technical documentation skills through organoleptic examination, photographic techniques and optical microscopy. 
  • Select, collect and prepare cross sections for observation under an optical microscope. 
  • Understand phenomena of textile support degradation. 
  • Handle optical and digital microscopes and pH measurement equipment. 
  • Understand the phenomena of degradation of ground and paint layers and final coatings. 
  • Recognize signs of degradation in the works under study. 
  • Develop a diagnosis based on technical and material knowledge of the work and identified pathologies. 
  • Propose treatment strategies. 
  • Recognize the characteristics, advantages and limitations of conservation materials (solvents, film-forming materials, canvas, pigments/paints). 
  • Perform structural and surface treatment techniques. 
  • Write technical reports and use proper terminology. 
  • Develop autonomy, group work and oral communication skills. 
  • Organize the workspace.
