Contemporary Thought I

4 ECTS / Semestral / English, Portuguese

This curricular unit aims to provide students with a broad, deep and critical knowledge of contemporary thinking, considering theory developed since the mid-twentieth century.

At the end of the unit, students should be able to:

a) Understand key concepts of the historical changes of the twentieth century, especially those of modernity and postmodernity.
b) Distinguish and understand the role of ideology in contemporary cultural systems and their artistic implications.
c) Understand the transformations undergone in poststructuralism and its implications for the notions of discourse and language.
d) Find and distinguish the different approaches to mass media.
