23 - 24 outubro 2025
Ordem Terceira de São Francisco do Porto · Universidade Católica Portuguesa
Call for abstracts until May 31, 2025.
After the academic and scientific relevance of the first two editions of the congress “O Porto Romântico” (Romantic Porto), which had notable collaborators in texts published in its proceedings, it is time to promote the organization of a new event, 11 years after the last edition was held.
Romantic Porto experienced one of the most effervescent periods in its history, with profound changes in the economy, population, mentalities and public and private life.
This III Congress aims to analyze, from a global perspective, the life of the city of Porto and its outskirts between 1839/1849 and the first decades of the 20th century, encompassing the various expressions of late-romanticism:
From the life of municipal, religious, commercial and philanthropic institutions, among others, to the different expressions of economic activities; From the life of the elites to the pulse of the other social strata; From the expressions of architecture and urbanism, painting, sculpture and the different decorative arts to musical, theatrical and literary manifestations; From journalism; From transportation to major public works, from trades to commercial companies; The different personalities and male and female characters; From public life to the realities of private life.
Throughout the days of the congress, the aim is to provide a global panorama of this fascinating period in Porto's history, which in many of its aspects requires more in-depth research. The scientificity of the papers will be monitored by the Scientific Committee, which brings together some of the leading experts in the areas of knowledge to be covered.
