Cursos Brotéria no Porto
The current crisis of Christianity and the future shape of the Church
24 and 25 Feb 2026 ● 18:00 – 19:30
with: P.José Frazão Correia SJ
The course will be held in Portuguese.
Three statements serve as the basis and outline for the programme. The first, from Pope Francis: ‘Our time is not just an era of change, but a true change of era.’ The second, from Czech thinker Tomáš Halík: ‘Christianity is searching for a new home and new forms of expression in a pluralistic, postmodern and post-secular society.’ The third, from Benedictine theologian Ghislain Lafont: ‘We have not yet found the “form” that will allow us to move forward more freely and expeditiously.’ Starting from the diagnosis of the crisis that marks the end of an era for the Catholic Church, exposing the still strong marks of the Gregorian-Tridentine-anti-modernist form and the still fragile formative traits inherited from the Second Vatican Council, the question arises as to what form Christianity of the future might take, one that is capable of expressing and realising the power of the Gospel of Jesus. The course will focus in particular on the categories of ‘power,’ ‘form,’ and ‘style.’
