Six students and alumni from the Master’s in Sound and Image (Animation specialization) at the School of Arts (EA) have been selected for the 49th edition of Cinanima, the most important Animation Film Festival in Portugal.
Maleza, by Carina Corso (alumna), is competing in the National Competition for one of the event’s top distinctions, the António Gaio Award. Also selected for the National Competition and the Young Portuguese Filmmaker section are the films of three recent alumnae: Paulinha by Ana Marta Mendes, Florescer by Mariana Pinheiro, and O Pássaro de Dentro by Laura Anahory (which was part of the official selection at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year). In the Young Portuguese Filmmaker competition, two films by current students of the Master’s in Sound and Image (Animation) at EA are also competing: Deuses Efémeros by Lia Gomes and Sara Oliveira, and Thyestean by Sara Oliveira.
The winner of the Cinanima Grand Prize for short films is included in the list of potential nominees for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, as the festival is one of the events recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The festival’s official selection also includes two films supported by the EA Digital Creativity Center, whose sound mixing was done by Vasco Carvalho, professor and coordinator of the Master’s in Sound and Image: Cão Sozinho by Marta Reis Andrade (Bando À Parte) and Porque hoje é sábado by Alice Eça Guimarães (Animais AVPL).
The event will take place from 7 to 16 November 2025 in Espinho, Portugal.
