Note of condolence:: João Queiroz

Thursday, October 23, 2025 - 12:18

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of artist João Queiroz, at the age of 68.

João Queiroz was born in Lisbon in 1957 and began his artistic career in the first half of the 1980s, while studying philosophy at the Faculty of Letters in Lisbon. These two strands, philosophical thought and artistic practice, converged in his work, which undertook a rigorous reflection on the role of the image in contemporary society. He investigated classic problems of the language of art through experimental approaches, exploring both the potential of written words in visual compositions and, from 1998 onwards, seeking to reveal sensory and non-descriptive representations of nature.

From 1989 to 2001, he taught Drawing, Painting, and Art Theory at the Ar.Co art center, contributing to the training of generations of artists in Portugal.

In 2019, he was at School of Arts and took part in the Panorama event, where he presented research on Art & Ecology in collaboration with the Serralves Foundation, reaffirming his commitment to artistic and theoretical issues relating to the dialogue between art and nature.

His departure leaves a significant gap in the visual arts scene in Portugal.
