DANIEL OLIVEIRA

University of Minho, Portugal - has Bachelor and Master Degrees in Civil Engineering by University of Porto, and a PhD Degree in Civil Engineering by University of Minho. Currently, he is Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering of University of Minho.
His main research interests are related to the experimental and numerical analysis of traditional masonry structures, earthquake engineering, strengthening of masonry structures based on innovative composite materials, earthen construction, risk assessment and durability.
Daniel Oliveira has been involved in 10 international and 16 national research projects in the field of masonry, funded on a competitive basis, carrying out coordination tasks in 10 of them. He supervised 2 post-Doc students, 27 PhD students and 76 MSc students. He is author of about 300 technical and scientific publications about masonry, holding currently a Scopus h-index of 22.
He worked in 3 RILEM committees as researcher and secretary, dealing with the strengthening of masonry and earthen construction.
He is deputy coordinator of the international Master Course in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions (SAHC), coordinated by University of Minho and funded by the European Commission for a period of 10 consecutive years.

DAVID THICKETT

English Heritage, UK - has a degree in natural sciences, PhD in archaeological conservation and chemistry and worked for two years in industrial ceramics research. He joined the British Museum in 1990, specialising in preventive conservation and inorganic materials conservation research. Joined English Heritage in 2003 as senior conservation scientist, mainly researching preventive conservation. Recent projects have focussed on historic house environments,  collections demography and  epidemiology, non destructive testing, microclimate frames  and optical coherence tomography. He is an assistant co-ordinator of the ICOM-CC Metals Working Group, and an ex co-ordinator of the Preventive Conservation Working Group. He sits as a UK expert to the European Standards CENTC 346 (conservation standards) and is a directory board member of the Infra-red and Raman Users Group.

MARIA MANUELA ESTEVEZ PINTADO

Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Portugal - B.Sc. in Pharmacy from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (1991) and Ph.D. in Biotechnology from the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP) in 1999. She is Associate Professor, Director of CBQF (Center of Biotecnhology and Fine Chemistry) – State Associate Laboratory and Associate Director of the College of Biotechnology of UCP. She is the leader of Biobased and Biomedical products group and coordinates the Bioactives and Bioproducts Research Laboratory. She has established strong interaction with industry for several years establishing R&I projects with more than 60 companies. Main research interest include development and characterization of bioactives and by-product upgrading through bioprocesses and extraction processes aiming to obtain high-added value products to be applied to different industries. She co-authored ca. 350 papers in international journals, a creator of 16 patents and she has been involved in the supervision/co-supervision of 22 concluded PhD theses and coordinated/co-coordinated ca. 80 externally funded projects.

MARIA J. MOSQUERA

University of Cadiz, Spain - is a Full Professor at Physical-Chemistry Department at University of Cadiz, Spain and she is the supervisor of the research group of Advanced Building Materials. Prof. Mosquera has been coordinator of 12 National Projects focused on advanced building materials (Funding >1 million euros) and She has been responsible of 10 contract with companies associated to building field (Funding >half a million euros). Currently, she is the coordinator of H2020 European Project INNOVACONCRETE (Funding 7 million €; 29 partners). In addition,she is member of the  editorial board of the indexed journals: Coatings and Journal of Cultural Heritage. Regarding to her scientific results, she is author over 90 papers and 9 patents (6 of them under exploitation). Porf. Mosquera has been supervisor of 7 PhD thesis and numerous master works.
Her main research is focused on developing building materials with innovative properties such as self-cleaning, decontaminating and biocidal properties. In the last year, her research in this topic has been focused on:
(i) Development of building materials with amphiphobic (super-hydrophobic/ oleophobic) properties, and super-hydrophobic materials having surface-induced superhydrophilia. These materials prevent the entry of dissolved contaminants into water or oily substances. In addition, the repellent effect give these surfaces self-cleaning properties.
(ii) Development of photoactive building materials with self-cleaning properties, due to their photocatalytic activity capable of degrading soot and other staining agents, and decontaminating properties, due to their ability to degrade NOx gases present in the atmosphere of our cities.
(iii) Development of concrete and other superhydrophobic / biocidal building materials. It is created a synergistic effect between both properties, generating materials that prevents the colonisation and growth of organisms.
In addition Prof. Mosquera is expertise in Cultural Heritage conservation. Specifically, she has developed crack-free consolidants and hydrophobic product with the special requirements for applying in Cultural Heritage elements. In the last years, she is focused on producing materials for preserving historic concrete. These materials are able to produce C-S-H gel, which is the responsible of engineering properties of the cement paste.

MORIEN REES

Varanger Museum, Norway -  studied architecture at the University of Wales and art history at the University of Oslo. He practiced architecture until 1994. Since 1994 he has worked in the museum sector. At present, he is employed in Varanger Museum on Norway’s North-eastern Arctic coast. He is chair of ICOM’s Working Group on Sustainability.
