It is with deep sorrow that the Escola das Artes learns of the unexpected passing of Rodrigo Cass.
Over the past year, it was a great privilege to talk and discuss with Rodrigo an exhibition project that spanned two cities. For several months, “Geometria Sensível” inspired the communities at the Escola das Artes and Brotéria. The School of the Arts cherishes the memory of the generosity, openness, and depth with which Rodrigo engaged in our conversations about “Sensitive Geometry.” His passing leaves a profound void among all those who crossed paths with him and followed his work.
In dialogue with the constructive tradition of Brazilian art, Rodrigo developed his own formal and material universe, in which forms paved the way for experiences of perception, relationship, and transcendence. The body emerged as a surface of contact, while forms—and, in particular, geometric forms—functioned as devices for relating to space and to what manifests within it.
Rodrigo Cass’s work expanded into a dimension in which gesture activated planes and objects, establishing dynamic relationships between matter and perception. In his practice, there was a mystical dimension permeated by the four elements—earth, water, air, and fire—understood as primordial forces that shape, transform, and vitalize. Geometry, far from being confined to a purely formal logic, thus became a way of touching and transforming the world, bridging the physical presence of matter and its openness to other dimensions of experience.
Rodrigo leaves us a deeply inspiring body of work that continues to open up new ways of seeing, feeling, and relating to the world. It is also through this possibility of seeing anew—and of discovering other dimensions of experience within forms—that his presence will remain among us.
The School of the Arts extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, galleries, and all those who worked with him.
