João Braz graduated in Cinema (Editing) from Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema, with extensive experience as an editor for cinema, television and advertising. In addition to other awards, he was twice winner of a Sophia for Best Editing by the Portuguese Academy of Cinema. He was editor for filmmakers such as Cláudia Varejão, João Botelho, João Canijo, Margarida Cardoso, Vicente Alves do Ó, Marco Martins, among others.
João Canijo (Porto 1957) is a Portuguese filmmaker who started his apprenticeship by working as an assistant director on films by Manoel de Oliveira, Wim Wenders, Paulo Rocha or Alain Tanner.
He made his directorial debut in 1983, with the short film “A Meio-Amor”. “Três Menos Eu”, his first feature film, came 5 years later.
He later worked for television, directing the series “Alentejo Sem Lei” (RTP). Since then, he has directed several feature films, such as “Sapatos Pretos”. “Ganhar a Vida”, “Noite Escura”, “Sangue do Meu Sangue”, “É o Amor” and “Fátima”.
His latest films have been deepening a method of reconstructing the real and questioning Portuguese identity, through prolonged immersion in specific communities of the actors who embody his characters.
João Pedro Rodrigues (Lisbon, 1966) studied at Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema. After working as an assistant director and editor, he began a career as a director that includes films such as “Parabéns!” (1997), “O Fantasma” (2000) “Odete” (2005), “Morrer como um homem” (2009), “A Última Vez que vi Macau” (2012) ou “O Ornitólogo” (2016). Frequently co-directing with João Rui Guerra da Mata, his films have been screened and awarded at important international film festivals such as Cannes or Locarno.
Between 1991 and 1995, Luís Urbano dedicated his activity in Lisbon to theater, music, video and cinema programming at the Gabinete das Festas de Lisboa and at the Clube Português de Artes e Ideias. In 1996, he returned to his origins and founded in Vila do Conde, in partnership with friends, the cultural production cooperative Curtas Metragens, CRL, responsible for Curtas Vila do Conde and the Curta Metragem Agency. In 2005, he became a producer at O Som e a Fúria, producing over 60 feature and short films. His filmography includes, among others, the films of Miguel Gomes, the latest films of Manoel de Oliveira, Ivo M. Ferreira, João Nicolau, Eugène Green, Sandro Aguilar, Manuel Mozos, Petra Costa, Lucrecia Martel and Ira Sachs.
Mariana Ricardo was born in Lisbon in 1980, where she lives and works. Studied Linguistics (Major) and Musical Sciences (Minor) at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2005). Her activity is divided between independent music and cinema. As a screenwriter, Mariana has participated in more than a dozen films, including works by Miguel Gomes, João Nicolau and Manuel Mozos.
Salomé Lamas studied Cinema in Lisbon and Prague, Visual Arts in Amsterdam and is currently a PhD student in Art Studies at the University of Coimbra. Working on the boundaries between fiction and documentary, as well as between the movie theater and the art gallery, she is the author of works such as “VHS: Video Home System” (2010-2012), “Golden Dawn (2011), “Encounters with landscape 3x” (2012), “A comunidade” (2012), “Terra de Ninguém” (2012), “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum” (2013), “A Torre” (2015), “Mount Ananea (5856’)” (2015), “El Dorado XXI” (2016), “Ubi Sunt” (2016), “Coup de Grâce” (2017) ou “Extinção” (2018).
In 1997, Sandro Aguilarcompleted the degree in Film - Editing at Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema. In 1998, he founded the production company O Som e a Fúria, where he works as a director, producer and editor. Mariphasa is his second feature film, the first being A Zona (2008). He directed 14 short films that won prizes at festivals such as La Biennale di Venezia, Locarno Film Festival, Gijón, Oberhausen, Vila do Conde, Indielisboa, Montreal and which were shown at the main film festivals worldwide. He was twice nominated for best short film at the EFA (European Film Awards) and has been the subject of retrospectives at BAFICI, Rotterdam Film Festival, New York Film Festival (Views from the Avant-Garde), Arsenal-Berlin and Oberhausen. In 2013 he was invited to join the renowned program DAAD – Artist in Residence, Berlin.
Rui Xavier completed his bachelor's degree in Audiovisual Communication Technologies at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto in 1995, becoming interested in Photography and Cinema. Afterwards, he moved to Great Britain, completing in 1997 a Postgraduate Degree in Photojournalism in Cardiff at the University of Wales. He worked in London as a photographer for the daily “The Independent”.
In 1998 he returned to Portugal as a freelancer, creating with other photographers the collective Kameraphoto. He began to experiment with video in the documentary area, founding Ricochete Filmes with Bruno Gonçalves. From 2003 to 2005 he was photo editor for the Grande Reportagem magazine. From 2006 onwards he has experimented with the various areas of film production as a scene photographer, camera operator, sound operator, and editor.
Paulo Américo holds a bachelor's degree in Audiovisual Communication Technology from the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, where he taught between 2001 and 2006. He is currently a trainer at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema. Since 2008, he has been one of the most reputed and sought-after color correction technicians in Portuguese cinema.
